Amanda's Scavenger Hunt






1)
Xylem: Xylem is one transport tissue that is in plants. Wood is the most common form of xylem. Wood is present in many plants. Xylem has the important job of transporting water nutrients throughout the plant even though it is composed of mostly dead cells. Sap is in fact an example of something that is transported though the Xylem which in this example would be wood.

Cellulose: A polymer is a cvhain of linking molecules. Cellulose is an example of a polymer found in nature. It is a form of sugar that provides structure and shape. Cellulose is found in plant cell walls. Cotton contains the purest form of cellulose. The cotton used to make this shirt is an example of this.

Pollen: Pollen is the fertilizing element of flowering plants. It consists of fine yellow powder made of spores which often forms in masses. Pollen is formed on the anther which is the male apparatus. The pollen grain of flowering plants is composed of three parts. The central cytoplasmic part is the source of nuclei responsible for fertilization. The other parts constituting the wall of the grain are an inner layer, the intine, and an outer layer. This plant is an example of a flowering plant that produces pollen.

Enzyme: An enzyme is a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. Eznymes regulate the rate at which cell’s chemical reactions continue without being altered in the process. Enzymes reduce the activation energy needed to start these reactions. without them, most these reactions would not take place at a useful rate. Because enzymes are not consumed, only small amounts are needed. Enzymes catalyze all aspects of cell metabolism, including the digestion of food, in which large nutrient molecules are broken down into smaller molecules that can be useful to the cells. Fruits contain enzymes alike any other cells that help do this.

Connective tissue: Connective tissue is tissue that connects, supports, binds, or separates other tissues or organs, typically having relatively few cells embedded in an amorphous matrix, often with collagen or other fibers, and including cartilaginous, fatty, and elastic tissues. Connective tissue is the most common of the tissue types in the body. The shape and form of the body, its organs, muscles, bones and the bodies architecture, are determined by the characteristics of connective tissues. Feet are an example that shows how connective tissues create structure in the human body.

IMG_0459.jpg Glycogen: an extensively branched glucose storage polysaccharide found in the Lowe and muscle of animals(like in this cat's leg), the animal equivalent of starch 

Histamine: a substance released by most cells that causes blood vessels to dilate and become more permeable during antiinflamitory responses

10) IMG_0363.jpgRadial symmetry is a characterized body shape like a pie or barrel with many equal parts radiating outward like the spokes of a wheel which can refer to flower structure. The rings that form in the trunks of trees are an example of radial symmetry.

11) IMG_2078.jpgSpores are mitotically produced haploid cells that divide mitotically generating a multicellular  gametophyte without fusing to another cell. Once produced, they often move through seed dispersal and can be found very far way from the mothering plant.

Specifically, it is the part of the pistil which holds the ovules and is located above or below or at the point of connection with the base of the petals and sepals. The pistil may be made up of one carpel or of several fused carpels, and the ovary can contain part of one carpel or parts of several carpels fused together.

IMG_0427.jpgGibberllins- any of a group of plant hormones that stimulate stem elongation, germination, and flowering. This plant is an example of this because it uses gibberlins in order to produce flowers.

 IMG_0424.jpgAnther and filament of stamen- where the pollen is produced and held until a pollinator takes the pollen to another flower. The anther is where the pollen is specifically held in the flower, and the filament is a small stem structure that keeps up the anther so it is more likely the flower will be pollinated by a pollinator. The anther can be attached to the filament at the end or in the middle.

IMG_0428.jpgCuticle layer of a plant-The cuticle layer, as shown here,is a waxy covering on the surface of stems and leaves that acts as an adaptation to prevent desiccation in terestrial plants.

Seed dispersal- the movement and separatiom of an adaptation for terrestrial plants consisting of an embryo packaged along with a store of food within a coat

 is dependent on  the internal generation of heat. Endotherms do this without the help from environmental factors.

Glucose is broken down in the presence of molecular oxygen into six molecules of co2and much of the energy released is preserved. Cellular respiration is a series of chemical reactions catalyzed by enzymes.

IMG_4533.jpgPredation- is defined as the preying of one animal on others or the action of attacking. Animals that are carnivores are animals that would participate in predation and these animals include animals like felines, canines, and other animals that cannot or do not rely solely on a vegetarian diet. These animals attack prey after they stalk them for a period of time. This cat exhibits predation when it chases birds, squirrels,chipmunks, and mice.

IMG_9890.jpgAuxin producing area of a plant -Auxin is a plant hormone found in the stem of the plant. Auxins are usually specified by their ability to cause cell elongation in stems, although they can also affect other processes. They are what makes the plant to form leaves and proceed in photo tropism. The plants that contain this hormone are usually leafy.

IMG_4649.jpgIMG_1907.jpgBilateral symmetry- Bilateral Symmetry is the property of being able to be divisible into two symmetrical halves. examples of this occur in nature which include things like butterflies and bats. In this situation, this leaf shows bilateral symmetry by being divided by its stem.

IMG_5168.jpgAnimal with a segmented body-a division of an animal’s body plan is called a segmentation, meaning the body is divided into unit in which it can function. .  Usually these form in 3 sections whethe rthere are singular or multiple units together.  The sections are called the head, thorax, and abdomen.

IMG_7845.jpgC3 Plant- Carbon fixation converts carbon dioxide and ribulose bisphosphate into 3-phosphoglycerate through a reaction that occurs in all plants as the first step of the Calvin cycle.  A plant that utilizes the C3 carbon fixation pathway as the sole mechanism to convert CO2 into an organic compound is called a c3 plant.

ATP is an adenine containing nucleotide triphosphate (also my initials) that releases free energy when its phosphate bonds are hydrolyzed. This energy is used to complete reactions in cells such as photosynthesis in this plant!
