1. Pollinator: A pollinator is the agent that transfers pollen from the male anthers of a flower to the female stigma of a flower in order for fertilization to take place. In this photo the bee is the pollinator; other pollinators include other insects and birds.
2. Pollen: Pollen is the microspores of seed plants and the fertilizing element of flowering plants. Pollen consists of fine, powdery, yellow grains or spores. In this photo the pollen is the yellow substance at the middle of the flower.
3. Flower Ovary: A flower ovary is the female reproductive portion of the plant and the enlarged basal portion of a pistil which contains ovules that become seeds upon fertilization.
4. Amniotic Egg: The amniotic egg contains specialized membranes that protect the embryo including the amnion, allantois, chorion, and yolk sac. Reptile and mammal embryos are kept in amniotic eggs as is this chicken egg.
5. Cellular Respiration: Cellular respiration is the most prevalent and efficient catabolic pathway for the production of ATP, in which oxygen is consumed as a reactant along with the organic fuel. All animals perform cellular respiration including dogs.
6. Population: A population is a localized group of individuals that belong to the same biological species that are capable of inbreeding and producing fertile offspring. In the photo above a population of ants is seen.7. Eukaryote: A eukaryote is an organism who's cell are organized into compartmentalized structures called organelles, the nucleus in particular. Eukaryotes include animals, plants, fungi, and protists including this goat, an animal.
8. Autotroph: An autotroph is an organism that obtains organic food molecules without eating other organisms or substances derived from other organisms. Autotrophs use energy from the sun or from the oxidation of inorganic substances to make organic molecules from inorganic ones. Most plants and some bacteria and protists are autotrophs including this flower.
9. Parasitism: Parasitism is a symbiotic relationship in which the symbiont (parasite) benefits at the expense of the host by living either within the host or outside the host. a tick as shown in the photo is an example of an ectoparasite (outside the host) living by hemtophagy (feeding on blood) on the blood of mammals, birds, and and sometimes reptiles and amphibians.
10. Spore: A spore is a meiotically produced haploid cell that divides mitotically, generating a multicellular individual, the gametophyte, without fusing with another cell. Some of the spore-producing organisms are bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants including this mushroom, a fungi.
11. Lichen: A lichen is the symbiotic collective formed by the mutualistic association between a fungus and a photosynthetic alga or cyanobacterium. The lichen in the photo above is the large green-gray substance on the tree.
12. Adaptation of a Plant: Adaptations of plants are the special features that allow a plant to live in a particular place or habitat. These adaptations help plant survive, live, and grow in different areas. Although the hydrangea in the photo above is native to southern and eastern Asia and the Americas they have adapted to live and survive in other parts of the world, especially the Azores.
13. Long-Day Plant: A long-day plant is a plant that flowers (usually in the late spring or early summer) only when the light period is longer than a critical length. Spinach, lettuce (as seen above), and some varieties of wheat are long-day plants.
14. C3 Plant: A C3 plant is a plant that uses the Calvin cycle for the initial steps that incorporate carbon dioxide into organic material, forming a three-carbon compound as the first stable intermediate. Potatoes are an example of a C3 plant.
15. Adaptation of an Animal: Adaptations of animals are traits in animals that allow them to evolve to their surroundings. Adaptations are the reasons animals can survive for so long despite many environmental changes.The rhinoceroses in this photo have adapted to living in a zoo and if put into the wild would not survive.
16. Bilateral Symmetry:
Bilateral symmetry is characterizing a body form with a central longitudinal
plane that divides the body into two equal but opposite halves. This is shown
in this turtle as it can only be divided symmetrically one way, longitudinally
down the middle.
17. Cuticle Layer of a Plant:
The cuticle layer of a plant is a waxy covering on the surface of stems and
leaves that acts as an adaptation to prevent desiccation in terrestrial plants.
As shown in this photo the leaf is covered by the waxy cuticle to protect the
leaf and plant.
18. Ectotherm: An ectotherm is an animal such as a reptile, fish, or amphibian that must use environmental energy and behavioral adaptations to regulate its body temperature. The lizard (reptile) shown in the picture is an ectotherm and uses environmental heat sources for body temperature regulation.
19. Endosperm: An endosperm is
a nutrient-rich tissue formed by the union of a sperm cell with two polar nuclei
during double fertilization, which provides nourishment to the developing
embryo in angiosperm seeds. This photo shows popcorn which is made up of
endosperm, the inside of the popcorn seed is soft and wet endosperm and the
outside of the seed is hard and stony endosperm. When popcorn seeds are heated
the water inside the soft endosperm gives off steam which expands and when the
pressure gets high enough the seed explodes.
20. Endotherm: An endotherm is
an animal, such as a bird or mammal that uses metabolic heat to regulate body
temperature. The guinea pig shown is an endotherm because it uses metabolic
heat to maintain its body temperature.
21. Ethylene: Ethylene is the
only gaseous plant hormone. It responds to mechanical stress, programmed cell
death, leaf abscission, and fruit ripening. The presence of ethylene is what
causes the bananas shown to ripen.
22. Exoskeleton: An
exoskeleton is a hard encasement on the surface of an animal, such as the shell
of a mollusk or the cuticle of an arthropod, which provides protection and
points of attachment for muscles. The shrimp shown are arthropods with
exoskeletons that protect them.
23. Fermentation: Fermentation is a catabolic process that makes a limited amount of ATP from glucose without an electron transport chain and that produces a characteristic end product, such as ethyl alcohol or lactic acid. Fermentation is what makes both the beer and wine shown have alcohol. Beer is derived from the fermentation of malt from the digestion of germinated grains. Wine is derived from fermented grape juice. Both beer and wine are fermentation products of yeasts.
24. Glycogen: Glycogen is an
extremely branched glucose storage polysaccharide found in the liver and muscle
of animals and is the animal equivalent of starch. It is found in bread (shown
in photo) and is the collection of carbohydrates stored inside muscle cells.
25. Gymnosperm: A gymnosperm
is a vascular plant that bears naked seeds — seeds not enclosed in specialized
chambers. Pine cones as the one shown are examples of gymnosperms because its
seeds are external and not protected or enclosed.
26. Heterotroph: A heterotroph
is an organism that obtains organic food molecules by eating other organisms or
their by-products. This lion cub is a heterotroph because it cannot produce its
own energy like plants do in photosynthesis. Lions get energy by feeding off of
other organisms including gazelles, warthogs, zebras, and buffalo.
27. K-strategist: A K-strategist is a species that uses a survival and reproductive 'strategy' characterised by low fecundity, low mortality, longer life and with populations approaching the carrying capacity of the environment, controlled by density-dependent factors. The oak tree shown is an example of a K-strategist because it matures and commits a smaller investment to each reproductive effort but does so for a long period of time.
28. Lipid Used for Energy
Storage: Lipids are a part of a family of compounds, including fats, phospholipids,
and steroids, which are insoluble in water. When olive oil is consumed it is
stored as fat and later used as energy.
29. R-strategist: An R-strategist is a species
whose population is run by their biotic potential. They have short pregnancies,
mature quickly, and live for a short time. The mouse shown in the photo is an R-strategist
because they live for a maximum of three years and have many offspring, short
gestation, less parental care, and a short time until sexual maturity.
30. Animal that has a Segmented Body: An animal that has a segmented
body is an animal whose body is divided into segments. As seen in this spider
its body has two different segments. The front segment is called the
Cephalothorax and consists of the eyes, mouth fangs, stomach, legs, brain and
the glands. The second segment is called the Abdomen and consists of the
spinnerets, the silk producing glands.
