Lauren's Scavenger Hunt



1. Amniotic egg





An amniotic egg is surrounded by a protective outer shell containing small pores, so that oxygen can travel to the embryo. There are four sacs inside the shell. The chorion carries oxygen to the embryo and carbon dioxide to the outer shell. The amnion, the membrane within the chorion, prevents the embryo from drying out. The allantois stores the waste for the embryo. Surrounding the embryo is the yolk sac which holds and digests the nutrients. The chicken egg pictured is an example of an amniotic egg.

2. Flower ovary



 
 The ovary is the female reproductive part of the plant. It is the lower part of the pistil that contains ovules. Inside the ovary is where the ovules develop into seeds .


3. Lichen



Lichen is the result of a symbiotic relationship between fungi and photosynthetic photobion, which is generally algae or cyanobacteria. Lichen is commonly found in harsh environments such as extremely cold like the Antarctic, or very dry like the desert. They are also found on the surface layer of trees, logs, and rocks. Lichen is pictured here on the surface of a pine tree.

4. Mutualism



 Mutualism is a type symbiotic relationship in which both organisms are benefitted. As pictured, the bee and the flower both gain from each other.  The bee spreads the flower’s pollen helping the flower and the bee receives nectar from the plant.

5. Stigma & Style of carpel





The stigma is the sticky surface at the tip of the style in which pollen is received during fertilization. The sticky surface is designed to easily catch pollen from pollinators.  The stigma is attached to the ovary by the style. On the top of the long pistils is where the stigma and style are located on this flower.


6. C4 Plant




A C4 plant is one of three mechanisms used in carbon fixation.  Prior to entering the Calvin cycle in a c4 plant, the carbon dioxide is fixed into a compound containing four carbon atoms. C4 plants survive better in high temperatures with an intense amount of sunlight and limits on CO2, nitrogen, and water. Corn is among some of the examples.

7. Autotroph


Autotrophs are organisms that are able to produce their own energy. This bush is an autotroph as it produces its own energy through photosynthesis. It takes in sunlight, water and CO2 and converts it into sugar and oxygen.

8. Cuticle layer of a plant



The cuticle layer of a plant is the waxy coating covering the epidermis of the plant. The semi-permeable layer protects against too much water gained or lost. It can also protect the plant from dangerous bacteria and viruses.

9. Ethylene



Ethylene is a hydrocarbon produced by the plant that acts as a plant hormone. It helps with plant growth and ripening fruit. Some of the effects of ethylene on the plant are the changes in texture, color, and the softness. Ethylene is responsible for the ripening of this tomato.

10. Cellulose



Cellulose is found in the cell walls of green plants. It is a carbohydrate and provides strength and rigidity to the cells. Cellulose is found in all cells of plants and is very hard to break down. Cellulose is not visible to the eye but is still in this plant, because all plants contain it.

11. Angiosperm



An angiosperm is a flowering plant that contains its seeds in ovaries. The ovaries act as protection for the seeds. The flower above is an angiosperm because the seeds are located away in the flower's ovaries.

12. Long day plant





Long-day plants flower only when exposed to light longer than the critical time. Late spring and summer are when this usually occurs because of the longer sun exposure. This potato is an example on a long day plant.

13. Gymnosperm






A gymnosperm is when the plant’s seeds are exposed,  as opposed to being enclosed by a ripened ovary. The seeds of this gymnosperm are in the cone although not visible. This pine cone is a gymnosperm as the seeds are hidden in the cone.

14. Cambium




Cambium is located between the xylem and primary phloem. It is responsible for the secondary growth of roots and stems. Cambium is usually found in woody plants. Cambium can be found in this cut tree because of cambium having a layer located in the bark.

15. Eukaryote




Eukaryotes are single celled or multi cellular organisms that contain a membrane bound nucleus and membrane bound organelles. Eukaryotes are bigger and more complex than prokaryotic cells.  There are four main types of Eukaryotic cells including animal cells, plant cells, fungi cells, and protest cells. This mushroom pictured here is an eukaryote as it is classified as a fungus.


16. Prokaryote



Prokaryotes are the simplest forms of living things. They are unicellular organisms, and do not contain membrane bound organelles. They also lack a true nucleus. Prokaryotes are much smaller than eukaryotes. They include the cells eubacteria and archaeabacteria. Cheese is a bacteria, so it is a prokaryote.

17. Animal with a segmented body

 

An animal with a segmented body may also be known as an arthropod. Arthropods are divided into three segmented bodies; the thorax, the abdomen, and the head.  They are the largest animal on Earth and can be known by their rigid external skeleton. This ant has a segmented body and is an arthropod.
 

18. C3 plant



A plant where carbon dioxide is fixed into a compound containing three carbon atoms before entering the Calvin Cycle. They thrive in moderate sunlight and temperature and where there is an abundance of water. Carbon levels are also usually high where c3 plants are grown. Rice is an example of a c3 plant.

19. Chitin



Chitin is a polysaccharide containing nitrogen. It can be found in many places, among them are: the cell walls of fungi, and the exoskeletons of arthropods. It is tough and provides protection. This mushroom is a part of the fungi kingdom, so it contains chitin in its cell walls.

 

20. Phloem



A phloem is a tissue in vascular plants that transports nutrients from the leaf to all parts of the plant. In trees the phloem can be found in the innermost layer of the bark. All of the trees pictured contain phloem.


21. Spore


 

A spore is a reproductive cell only formed by certain organisms. Spores reproduce asexually and are haploid. They can survive under extremely harsh and unfavorable conditions. Plants, algae, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria are among organisms that use spores for reproduction. Ferns are plants that use spores to reproduce.

22. Heterotroph


 

A heterotroph is an organism that is unable to synthesize its own organic compounds. They have to receive their food from feeding on other organic material. Out of the six kingdoms animals, fungi, some protists, and some bacteria are all heterotrophic. Abby is a heterotrophy as she eats food to get her energy.

23. Cellular respiration




Cell respiration is a process which takes place in the cells. During cell respiration sugar and oxygen is converted into energy, water, and carbon dioxide. The process takes place in the mitochondria of all eukaryotes. This process is essential to living things because the energy formed is needed in many other metabolic processes. A dog performs cell respiration to get energy.

24. Genetic variation



Genetic variation is when species in a population breed and have offspring, but there is a variety in the offspring’s appearance. The hydrangeas are all the same species but some have different colors. The hydrangeas have a different allele combination causing a difference in phenotypic appearance.

25. K-strategist



K-strategists are organisms that’s survival and reproductive strategy aims for a longer life. K-strategists have fewer offspring that are usually larger. The offspring of K-strategists usually reproduce requires care from the mother for longer periods of time. This dog is an example of a K-strategist because it lives a longer life, and only has one offspring at a time.

26. Hydrophobic




Hydrophobic means lacking an affinity to water or being able to repel it. Olive oil hydrophobic because it does not dissolve in water.

27. Genetically modified organisms



Genetically modified organisms are organisms whose genetic material has been altered by genetic engineering. Common genetically modified organisms are corn and other plants, fish, and yeasts. Strawberries are genetically modified organisms due to having strawberries year round against harsh conditions.

28. Xylem



Xylem is a type of vascular tissue that is responsible for transporting water and nutrients from the roots to leaves. Xylem is primarily found in wood plants. They also provide structural support to the plant. Xylem is a main component of wood in plants and can be found in this tree.

 

29. Asexual Reproduction



Asexual reproduction is s type of reproduction that only involves one organism. Meiosis is not involved in asexual reproduction. Due to no crossing over of genes, the parent and daughter cells have the same genes and are identical. All plants reproduce asexually. These flowers are an example of organisms that reproduce asexually.

30. Eubacteria



Eubacteria is true bacteria and it covers all bacteria except for archaebacteria. Yogurt is among some foods that has eubacteria in it.
