2.Cuticle layer of a plant: The cuticle layer of a plant is a non-cellular protective layer that protects the epidermis of the green parts of leaves. It also provides support for the plants much like human skin. The coating of the leaf in this picture is the cuticle layer.
3.Artificial Selection: Artificial selection is human intervention in animal or plant reproduction to ensure that certain desirable traits are represented in successive generations. Buddy is a puggle which is a mix of pug and beagle. These two different kinds of dogs are bred together so that the offspring is desirable traits from both parents
4.Niche: A niche refers to the specific area or role of an organism or species has in an ecosystem. In this example, the tree absorbs light, water, and nutrients and gives off oxygen.
5.Amniotic Egg: an amniotic egg is the egg produced by reptiles, birds, and egg-laying mammals, in which the embryo develops inside an amnion.
6. Long-day plant: A plant that flowers only after being exposed to light periods longer than a certain critical length, as in summer. Lettuce is an example of a long day plant.
7. Pollinator: A pollinator is an organism that transfers pollen from an anther to the stigma of a flower. In the picture the bee is acting as the pollinator to the flowers.
8. Cellular Respiration: The series of metabolic processes by which living cells produce energy through the oxidation of organic substances. Cats, like all living organisms go through cellular respiration.
9. Glycogen: Glycogen is a substance deposited in bodily tissues as a store of carbohydrates. Dogs, like all other animals, store glycogen.
10. Exotherm: An exotherm is an animal that generates heat, also known as warm-blooded animals. Dogs are warm blooded.
11. Asexual reproduction: Asexual reproduction is a mode of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single parent, and inherit the genes of that parent only. Plants use this form of reproduction.
12. Auxin producing area of a plant: Auxin is a hormone that is made by plants in areas where a new root or shoot is growing. The new flower bud is where the auxin is produced.
13. K-Strategist: K-strategists are species that reproduce small amounts of offsprings but concentrate on the survival of their offsprings. Some of the characteristics of K-strategist is that they live longer and and reproduce more slowly. Dogs are an example of a k-strategist.
14. Autotroph: An organism capable of synthesizing its own food from inorganic substances, using light or chemical energy is an autotroph. Green plants, algae, and certain bacteria are autotrophs.
15. Flower Ovary: The innermost whorl in the center of a flower is the female reproductive structure, or pistil. The lower part of the pistil is the ovary.
16. Anther and Filament of a stamen: The anther and filament of the stamen is where the pollen is produced and carried until a pollinator comes by and takes the pollen to another flower. The anther is where the pollen is specifically held in the flower, and the filament is a small stem like structure that holds up the anther up higher so that there is a higher chance that a pollinator will come by and some pollen will rub on it so the pollinator can pollinate the next flower it visits or it will be blown away with the wind.
17. Exoskeleton:
An exoskeleton is a hard outer structure, such as the shell of an insect or
crustacean, which provides protection or support for an organism. A lobster has
a hard exoskeleton.
19. Mutualism: Mutualism is an association between organisms of two different species in which each member benefits. In this relationship the clownfish benefits because it has protection from the anemone, which is otherwise a poisonous organism. The anemone benefits because the clownfish swims in and out, bringing in fresh water. The anemone, being a filter feeder, feeds off the micro-organisms that the fresh seawater that the clownfish brings in which helps the anemone grow faster.
20. Adaptation
of an Animal: Adaptation of an animal is an alteration or adjustment in
structure or habits, often hereditary, by which a species or individual
improves its condition in relationship to its environment. This bird is an
example because its beak is shaped in this way in order to get it’s food.
21. Ectotherm:
an ectotherm is an organism that is dependent on external sources of body heat. Frogs are ectotherms
22.Negative Feedback: Negative Feedback is a primary mechanism of homeostasis, whereby a change in physiological variable that is being monitored triggers a response that counteracts the initial fluctuation.
23. Eubacteria: Eubacteria Literally means true bacteria, which includes all bacteria except for archaebacteria. Yogurt contains eubacteria.
24. Epithelial Tissue: Epithelial tissue is membranous tissue covering internal organs and other internal surfaces of the body. Skin covers the entire external surface of the human body, making it an example of epithelial tissue.
25. Stigma and style of carpel:
The carpel of a flower is the female reproductive organ of flowering plants,
consisting of an ovary, style and stigma. The style is the usually slender part
of a pistil, situated between the ovary and the stigma. The style is the receptive apex of the pistil of a flower, on
which pollen is deposited at pollination.22.Negative Feedback: Negative Feedback is a primary mechanism of homeostasis, whereby a change in physiological variable that is being monitored triggers a response that counteracts the initial fluctuation.
26. Ethylene: Ethylene is plant growth hormone that helps fruit ripen. The effects of Ethylene can be seen in a banana.
27. Hydrophilic: If something is hydrophilic it has an affinity to water and is capable of interacting with water through hydrogen bonding. Salt is hydrophilic.
28. Hydrophobic: If something is hydrophobic it means that is lacking an affinity to water and is insoluble in water. Olive oil is hydrophobic and will not dissolve in water.
29. Connective Tissue: Connective tissue forms the supporting and connecting structures of the body. Cartilage is flexible connective tissue found in the ear.
30. Coelomate: A coelomate is an animal with a coelom which is a fluid filled body cavity formed from the splitting of lateral mesoderm during embryonic development. A grasshopper is a coelomate.
