Pollen: Pollen the fertilizing element of flowering plants. It is a fine, powdery, yellowish substance produced by the anthers of plants. Pollen consists of numerous fine grains containing the male gametes that can fertilize the female ovules. Pollen is transferred from the anther of one plant to the pistil of another plant by wind, insects or other animals. The pistil is the female organ of a flower, including the stigma, style, and ovary. The flowers in this picture contain pollen.
Pollinator: A pollinator is the agent that moves pollen from one plant to another. A pollinator could include an insect or a bird. In this picture the bee is the pollinator.
Amniotic egg: Amniotic eggs contain a yolk to nourish the developing organism. The shell helps prevent drying,
and inside the egg are a series of fluid-filled membranes which allow the embryo
to survive. This kind of
egg is unique to the amniotes, including turtles, lizards, birds and other animals. The chicken egg is an example of an amniotic egg.
Ectotherm: An ectotherm is an animal such as a reptile (not including birds), fish, or amphibian, that must use environmental energy and behavioral adaptations to regulate its body temperature. This snake is an ectotherm because it is a reptile.
Endotherm: An endotherm is an animal, such as a bird or a mammal, that
uses metabolic heat to regulate body temperature. This rabbit is an endotherm
because it is a mammal.
Lichen: Lichen is formed by the mutualistic association between a fungus and a photosynthetic alga or cyanobacterium. This tree is covered in lichen.
Autotroph: An autotroph is an organism that obtains organic food molecules without eating other organisms or substances from other organisms. Autotrophs use sun energy or energy from the oxidation of inorganic substances to make organic molecules from inorganic ones. This flower is an autotroph because it obtains its food using sunlight in the process of photosynthesis.
Bilateral Symmetry: Bilateral symmetry is a characterization of the body form
where the body is divided into two equal but opposite halfs along a central
longitudinal plane. This dragonfly has bilateral symmetry because if you were
to divide it in half, the halves would be equal but opposite.
Angiosperm: An angiosperm is a flowering plant that forms seeds inside
a protective chamber called the ovary. An angiosperma plant that produces seeds
within an enclosure; they are fruiting plants, although more commonly referred
to as flowering plants. This plant is an angiosperm because it bears fruit
which contain seeds.
Gymnosperm: A gymnosperm is a vascular plant that bears naked seeds
(seeds that are not enclosed in specialized chambers). This pinecone is a
gymnosperm.
Stigma and Style of Carpel: A style is the stalk of a flower’s carpel, with the ovary
at the base and the stigma at the top. The stigma receives pollen at pollination
and it is on the stigma that the pollen grain germinates.

Chitin: Chitin is a structural polysaccharide of an amino acid
sugar. It is a tough, protective, semitransparent substance that
acts as the main component of arthropod exoskeletons and the cell walls of some
fungi. This insect has chitin in its exoskeleton.
Cuticle Layer of a Plant: The
cuticle layer of a plant is a waxy covering on the surface of stems and leaves.
This layer prevents desiccation and protects the plant from UV radiation and different
kinds of physical, chemical and biological agents. The cuticle layer also
provides some support to the plant.
Tropism: A tropism is a growth response that results in the curving
of plant organs toward or away from stimuli owing to differential rates of cell
elongation. This plant has become a tropism from bending toward sunlight.
Hydrophobic: When something is hydrophobic it has an aversion to water.
It tends to coalesce and from droplets in water. Oil is hydrophobic because it
does not mix with water.
Anther and Filament of Stamen: The stamen is the pollen-producing reproductive organ of a
flower, consisting of an anther and a filament. The filament is the stalk of
the stamen. The anther is the pollen-bearing part of the stamen. This flower
contains an anther and a filament.
Animal that has a Segmented Body: Segmentation is the division
of a body part into segments. It can be homomeric segmentation in which the
segments are more or less the same, or heteromeric segmentation where the

that supports and protects an animal's body. Examples of exoskeleton animals
include various types of insects, crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters, and various groups of shelled mollusks, including snails and clams. This lobster has an

Eukaryote: Eukaryotes include animals, plants, protists and fungi. These
organisms are composed of one or more
cells. These cells each contain a clearly defined nucleus enclosed by a membrane,
along with membrane-bound organelles that perform specific functions. This ladybug is a eukaryote because it belongs to the animal kingdom.
Territorial Behavior: Territorial behavior is a behavior in which an animal
defends a bounded physical space against encroachment by other individuals.
This may involve direct aggression or indirect mechanisms, such as scent
marking or singing. My dog displays territorial behavior when she is eating her
treats and someone comes near her by growling and covering the treat.
Modified Leaf of a Plant: This is a modified leaf of a plant, adapted to suit its
environmental needs and to increase its chances of survival. This leaf has
spines on it for protection.
Modified Stem of a Plant: This is a modified stem of a plant, adapted to better suit
the plant's needs and increase its chances of survival in its environment. This
stem has thorns on it for protection.
Xylem: Xylem is one of the
two types of transport tissue in plants. It is located in stems, leaves and roots.
The most common xylem tissue is wood, which is found throughout the plant. Its function is to
transport water and minerals throughout the plant. This tree contains xylem.
Phloem: Phloem is the
other type of transport tissue in plants. Phloem is located in stems, leaves
and roots. Its function is to transport food and nutrients around the plant for
energy. These trees contain phloem.
Cellular Respiration: Cellular
respiration is a process in which the body obtains energy through food/sugars
and oxygen. In eukaryotic cell, this process occurs in the mitochondria. My dog performs cellular respiration in order get energy to perform
activities.
Cellulose: Cellulose is a polysaccharide made up of chains of linked glucose molecules. Cellulose makes up most of cell walls in plants. It provides structure to plants.
