Matthew's Scavenger Hunt

Butter is an example of a lipid used for energy storage.  Butter, a fatty acid, contains oil and lipids. Lipids contain many calories that store energy over long periods of time.

All reptiles are ectotherms. Also known as being "cold blooded" this means that their body temperature is based on the temperature of their environment. In order to stay at a stable body temperature, they must go to either warmer or cooler spots of their ecosystems (in the sunlight or I the water).

This cat is a k-strategist. This is an animal that produces litters with a small number of offspring, but the offspring are large in size. The mothers are parents to the offspring for a fairly long time, unlike r-strategists.

The ovary of the flower is located in the part of the pistil that contains the ovules. The fruits of the flowers are the ovaries that contain the seeds.

This leaf is a hydrophobic surface. All this means is that It is a substance that tends to repel water, rather than attract it. The leaf is polar making its molecules not attracted to the molecules of water.

All members of the animal, plant and fungi  kingdoms are eukaryotes. Eukaryotes are just organisms that contain membrane bound organelles, including a nucleus, in their cells. They are more complex than prokaryotes. Humans are included in this category.

All mammals, including Spicy, are endotherms. Endotherms, or warm blooded animals, have the innate ability to keep the internal body temperature at a set level. Outside temperatures have little effect on the organism's homeostasis as whole.

Cellulose is a protein that is found in grass. Cellulose is a protein that requires a special enzyme in order to digest. Humans do not contain this enzyme, making grass inedible. However, animals such ass horses and cows use grass as a main food group because they do contain the enzyme.

Eggs that contain extra membranes to protect the embryo are called amniotic eggs. All bird eggs are considered to be amniotic eggs simply because of the yolk. This is the membrane that provides the extra protection.

This spider is an example of an r-strategist. This means that the spider has an abundance of offspring at a very young age. The offspring have a very low chance of survival, and the mother does little parenting.

This maple tree is considered to be an angiosperm. Angiosperms are seed-producing plants, like gymnosperms. Angiosperms are characterized by a few specifics. One being that they produce flowers, another being that they have endosperm within their seeds. But, the most common distinction is that angiosperms produce fruits that contain seeds inside of them. The seeds are not produced on the surface of the plant.

Pine trees are in a group of seed-producing plants called gymnosperms. Gymnosperms are characterized by producing their seeds on the surface of their leaves or scales instead of in an enclosed shell.

Gibberellins are plant hormones that effect growth, size, length and shape of a plant. This image shows vines wrapping around a post naturally. Gibberellins influenced these vines to grow faster on the outsides and slower on the insides (causing the vines to turn). Plants always want to grow to their full potential and gibberellins recognize when a change in growth needs to be done in order to continue getting larger.

This image shows the stigma and style of the carpel of a flower. During pollination the pollen needs to be gathered by the pistil in order for reproduction to take place. This is where the pollen is physically collected. The style is a tube like part of the flower that allows a place for the pollen to go. The stigma is the part at the end of the style which has a sticky substance for the pollen to stay in place.

Plants produce a course powder containing the sperm cells of the organism called pollen. The transfer of pollen from the stamen of a flower to the pistil of another is how these types of organisms reproduce. Plants depends on natural factors like wind, as well as animals such as birds and bumble bees to take part in the transferring process.

Organisms in different animal phyla #2: This toad is in the phylum Chordata. This is an extremely common phylum that includes mammels, reptiles, amphibians, fish and even birds. It possesses the subphyla Vertebrata. Over 75,000 species, including humans, are in the phylum Chordata.

Organisms in different animal phyla #1: This earth worm is in the phylum Annelida. Annelida includes all types of worms from string to rope. There are over 22,000 modern species in this phylum.

Gardens and farms are perfect examples of artificial selection. Artificial selection is the prossess of humans effecting the abundancy, or lack there of, of an organism. Because humans provide water and nutrients to the plants that they have in their gardens, this gives these plants an unfair advantage compared to if they were growing in the wild. Humans can pick and choose what plants we want to have.  A plant that could not survive well in normal circumstances may be chosen to be put in a garden because of its pretty color, use for food ect. This will increase its survival rate.

Organisms in different kingdoms #3: Mushrooms are the face of the fungi kingdom. All fungi are multicellular, eukaryotic heterotrophs. But, the most defining aspect of a mushroom is that it is a decomposer. Decompsers break down dead and decaying organisms and turn the into nutrients for the soil. These nutrients are what plants them use to grow. Other types of fungi include yeast and mold.

Organisms in different kingdoms #2: Breezy is a dog, which is in the animal kingdom. Like Breezy, animals are classified by being multicellular, eukaryotic heterotrophs. Animals are known to be the most complex of the kingdoms. Many have the ability to think and reason, making them at the top of any known food chain.

Organisms in different kingdoms #1: This tomato plant is of the plante kingdom. Plants are defined by being multicellular, eukaryotic autotrophs. Their autotrophic abilities come from their membrane organelles called chloroplasts. These organelles, which also give plants their green color, allow the plant to go through photosynthesis, the prossess that makes glucose and oxygen.

Different types of carbohydrates #2: Pasta is a more complex type of carb called a polysaccharide. More specifically, pasta is a polysaccharide called a starch. Staches are comprised of many glucose molecules or monosaccharides. Pure starches are colorless, oderless and tasteless.

Different types of carbohydrates #1: glucose and other types of sugars are all a type of carb called monosaccharides. A monosaccharide is the most simple type of carb and is actually the building block for more complex carbs. Monosaccharides are colorless oderless and usually have a sweet taste.

A heterotroph is an organism that lacks the capabilities to make or provide any and all nutrients and food needed for that said organism to survive. Instead, heterotrophs rely on other organisms for its needed nutrient intake. All members of the animal kingdom are heterotrophs, including this massive slug.

A population is a group of the same species of organism living in the same geographical area with the innate capability of interbreeding. These clovers, satisfying all 3 conditions of being a population, represent the term well.
This picture which is very bad and hard to see does in fact (believe it or not) show a water bug displaying the effects of adhesion and cohesion. It shows the attraction that the water has to the water bug. Unlike molecules attracted causes this.
All plants need to be pollinated in some way in order to survive. The most common method of pollination is by birds and bugs and such. To insure that this flower was pollinated it evolved to obtain bright colorful flowers to attract the pollinators. This is an example of adaptation of a plant. +
This is an example of predation in which a ball python has killed a mouse. A predator is any animal that hunts or uses any other animal for food.

An autotroph is an organism that does not rely on any other organism in order to obtain its food and nutrients. These such organisms use their non-living environment and specific organelles (such as chloroplasts) to under go processes which supply themselves with nutrients. All members of the Plante kingdom, this flower for example,  are autotrophs.
Lichens are the result of a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and a photosynthetic photobion usually being a type of algae. Lichens can be found all around the world from the most extreme to the most temperate weather.
